What is SUN

SUN Community Schools are full-service neighborhood hubs where the school and partners from across the community come together to make sure kids and families have what they need to be successful - in school and in life.

SUN Community Schools mobilize and strategically organize community resources to provide:

• Strong core instructional program
• Educational support and skill development for youth and adults
• Enrichment and recreation activities
• Family involvement and support
• Social, health and mental health resources
• Family and community events

At SUN Community Schools, the collective efforts of youth, parents, businesses, faith communities, libraries, and community organizations create a network of supports that ensure academic success, family self-sufficiency, and economic prosperity. SUN Community Schools are open to all ages, preschool to seniors, with a focus on students in the immediate school community.

● Wrap around services including:Urban Gleaners Food Distribution, Winter Gift Shop, Resource Navigation (such as utility assistance) as able to
● School events such as BIPOC Family Night, STEAM Night, Community Yoga Classes, and more!
● Summer Programming

How To Sign Up For SUN
Parents/Guardians will create accounts in GroupTrail to sign up their students for SUN.
Parents/Guardians will be able to select which classes they'd like to sign their students up for, with a class description and the days and times classes occur. 

All Creston families are asked to register their children for Big Group Games Recess Support in addition to any afterschool class they may want to sign up for.

To create an account, go to Sign Up For SUN Registration on GroupTrail to register the email for the primary guardian signing up the student.

Recess Support:

SUN will continue to provide recess support everyday that school is in session, including early release days. This means every Creston student participates in SUN programming. We ask that all Creston parents register for Big Group Games Recess Support.

Mo and Tyrone will be back again this year alternating weeks they are supporting, with Creston SUN's new EDC Zandy out there as our everyday person. These staff ensure recess has enough staff to supervise students to ensure safety, help with conflict resolution and make sure kids are having fun with additional game opportunities provided. 

 

Afterschool Program:

 

Fall Term: 9/22 to 11/12

 

Winter Term: 1/12 to 2/25

 

Spring term: 3/30 to 5/13

 

Afterschool programming will run Mondays through Thursdays from 2:30 to 5 pm, with the option for extended care until 5:30 pm if needed. SUN will not operate on no school days or early release days. With the upcoming I-5 closures please let SUN staff know if you need extended care during after school programming. Events:

SUN will be at Back To School Night

SUN will continue partnering with the CCMA and PTA to offer the Winter Gift Shop in mid December (dates TBD).

SUN will host BIPOC Family Night on 2/17

SUN will host STEAM Night with Champions in Mid March (date TBD)

SUN will host Queer Family Night in late May or early June (date TBD)

Any additional events or adult classes will be shared once finalized. An updated Calendar will be shared once event dates have been confirmed.

Hello, my name is Bridgitte Lynch (She/Fey)
I am the Site Manager for Creston SUN Community School.

I use She/ Her pronouns and identify as queer and neurodivergent.
Being autistic with ADHD means life is never boring and also leads to processing delays. I do well with reminders from kids and adults.

I have been with SUN since January 2022. I have taught Arts and Crafts, Dance, AKA Science, Comic Book Club, Legos and Boardgames, and Scavenger Hunt Class, along with helping support the staff. In the summer of 2023 I transitioned from being the EDC to the site manager. I’m excited to be in this role and share my passion for the arts with the kiddos, because without ART, EARTH is just EH. Hello everyone! My name is Zandy (they/she)

Let me start by saying that I am so incredibly excited to be joining the Creston community! This is my fifth year living in Portland. And while I was born and raised in Colorado, nothing feels quite like home more than the PNW.

Last year, I graduated from Portland State University where I studied social work, with an emphasis in child, youth and family studies. This is where I fostered my passion for supporting resilient communities. Also as someone who has directly benefited from programs like SUN throughout my life, I know first hand how meaningful they can be.

Outside of school, you might find me practicing my roller skating skills. If I'm not outside playing, I like to make all kinds of art! Whether that be crochet, painting, or collage-- I love it all! But if there is one thing I love more than anything else it's learning! And I can't wait to see the wonderful things I am going to learn from all of you this year.
